Lone Survivor does a pretty excellent job of introducing you to our core soldiers, fleshing them out, and giving them at least two dimensions: some clues to their civilian lives back home, and the aforementioned excellent chemistry between the men as a team. It rises above slasher movie syndrome, where you know every single character is going.

Todd Plitt, USA TODAYMarcus Luttrell says part of himself died on the Afghanistan mountain where his three Navy SEAL comrades perished in the ill-fated 2005 mission Operation Red Wings. But miraculously, as the film Lone Survivor (opening limited Wednesday, wide Jan. 10) depicts, an unconscious Luttrell was saved by an Afghan villager after crawling miles to safety. Luttrell suffered a broken back from falls down the mountain to escape enemy forces, along with numerous shrapnel and a gunshot wounds. He still carries the emotional and psychological scars.' Thank God he continues to get better and healthier,' says Mark Wahlberg, who portrays Luttrell in the film, adapted from Luttrell's best-selling 2007 book (co-written with Patrick Robinson).

'He could have gone down a darker path. But he has a lot of beauty in his life now. And there's nothing better than seeing Marcus laughing.' Luttrell, 38, is in the constant presence of his white Labrador service dog Mr. Rigby, who helps to calm him.

'It's amazing to watch the effect that dog has on him,' says Wahlberg.Luttrell also receives tremendous support from his wife Melanie.' My wife saved my life,' he says. 'I am the man I am today because of her. It's the best thing that ever happened to me.'

The two met after corresponding over e-mail and phone in May 2010.' When we saw each other we both knew this is it,' says Melanie, 34. 'He pretty much called it that week when he said, 'I'm going to marry you.' When someone says that to you when you first meet it might be weird. But it wasn't with Marcus. I loved his confidence.'

The couple live on a ranch outside of Houston with their two young children, along with Melanie's 16-year-old son.Melanie says the man she knows is a 'teddy bear' who reads to the kids each night and leaves random romantic notes around the house for her. But she sees the impact the mission still has on him even in the way he is unable to sleep at night.Luttrell has had several invasive surgeries, including having a protective cage placed around his spine and artificial discs.

'What you see in the movie with him falling onto the rocks really happened. It totally screwed up his back and it only gets worse,' says Melanie. 'And his knees have been a big issue. That's probably going to be the next surgery.'

Each year during the June anniversary of Operation Red Wings, Luttrell goes on a 'blackout week' where he doesn't communicate with the world.' It's a mourning period that whole week,' says Melanie. 'It just feels wrong to continue with everyday life that week. So he stops, reflects, prays and pays his respects to the guys that died that day and the families they left.'

Though there is no great amount of new data for those who have read Lone Survivor and Victory Point, and watched the documentary The Taliban Gambit - Helicopter Missions, it does bring in a few bits and pieces that help us put the puzzle together, either by contrast to or by confirmation of other accounts.
