I will be moving North this year and I am wanting to really get into duck hunting. I have been fortunate to have hunted some pretty good places and some say I am spoiled. I have always went with others and never had the gear just a shotgun,bulletts, and a trigger finger.

I was wondering if New Hampshire is a good duck hunting state or dont waste my time. I was looking at the numbers and I understand its not Arkansas, Oklahoma, or Texas but would like to get the opinion of actual duck hunters in the state before investing money into it. Thanks for your input. I've never hunted Great Bay, so I can't comment on hunting it.

Our 14 year old son is addicted to waterfowl hunting. We usually hunt small ponds, 50 acres or less, and beaver floods (ponds). I live in Southern New Hampshire. The key is scouting them early in the morning prior to the season.

This will give you an idea of which way the ducks will be moving.From everything I read prior to the season opening, this was supposed to be an excellent year for waterfowl hunting. We did see quite a few the first half. By the time the second half rolled around, there were hardly any flying.

I don't know if the Halloween snow storm screwed them up. We had one beaver pond that would hold ducks late in the season. It was usually empty this year. That spot doesn't get any pressure, too.The ducks would start to move around legal shooting time. There would be a lull in the action for about a half hour, then it would pick up for another 45 minutes or so.

We would only see groups of two to six birds flying at a time. In the two hour stretch we were out, maybe we would see only twenty to thirty birds total. That would have been the first half.

Sometimes during the second half of the season, we wouldn't see any flying. The bay might be different, though.Last year, our son wanted to save money for either a Browning Maxus, or a SBE II. He now realizes this is New Hampshire, and not the Central Flyway. His 870 will suit him fine.

This past season was kind of disappointing for us. 257 Thats one beauty of a pup you have there.

If I was to get out and see one I am fine with that. I need to learn how to call or hell even how to identify them to begin with.

Can you duck hunt pretty much all of the WMD's in NH? I like to learn by trial and error. I have been several times and have a general idea of how to place decoys and pull the trigger. Never had to call or actually have to find birds. I have hunted duck impoundments in SC so it was just wait and shoot.

I would like to get my 8 year old involved as well not shooting this year just getting him out. I just got a good deal on a Beretta 390 so Im gonna want to put it to work. I appreciate the info. Nice setup there and a very beautiful dog. I do indeed need to get some instructional DVD's and start watching no doubt about it.

I have a Bass Pro about 7 minutes from my house so I will stop in there and take a look. I hunted Ted Turners impoundments in SC and so my expierence has been to wait and shoot. The only thing I do know about duck hunting is Im gonna be forking out some money here in the near future for some decoys. Question do you need several different kinds of decoys. If I intend to see woodys should I put out just woodys or will mallards work for woodys to decoy to.

Destroyer, there are some areas off limits to waterfowl hunting in NH. You will have to double check with NHFG. We don't currently use decoys.

From this years scouting, it seemed as if the ducks were headed toward the Merrimack River. I think the decoys would have been useless.We have had the best success using Federal Black Cloud, or Hevi-Metal shells. I bought some Winchester Blind Side to try out this year. It was a bad mistake.

At around 40 yards, we couldn't put a bird down. We use just the plain Remington modified choke that came with our guns.

You may not be able to use a full choke with certain shot sizes (BBB). We haven't had the time, nor the money to experiment with aftermarket choke tubes.An old duck hunter who hunted Great Bay told me to have the majority of decoys as Black Ducks. I was also reading an article where the author stated Canada Goose decoys used as a majority will attract all types of waterfowl. Be advised that if you hunt Great Bay, you will need a sturdy boat.

A canoe or john boat will put your life in jeopardy.I also agree with 2browndogs. Waterfowl hunting is the best way to introduce a youngster to our sport. They have a higher percentage of seeing game, and of actually doing some shooting. This is why I chose to get our son interested in duck hunting. Now he is addicted to it. I can't say the same thing would have happened if we just went deer hunting.Lastly, 2browndogs gives great advice about using Google Earth.
