Yes, it’s a game mechanic that has been used (some might even say overused) in mobile games over the last few years, but its accessibility and popularity can’t be denied. Zynga has jumped in with FarmVille: Harvest Swap for both iOS and Android, wrapping familiar gameplay elements in exactly the kind of polish and character that you’d expect from them.Though it starts out in very straightforward fashion, Harvest Swap surprises a bit with the way it constantly adds more tricks to its repertoire as you advance. Once you get about 20 levels in, you’ll find yourself with a lot more to remember than you did when you began. Not to worry, though. At its most basic level, the idea is to match three or more of the same vegetables or fruits and clear them off the board. Unlike some Match-3 games, you can only drag a symbol one spot in any direction to complete a match. Pay special attention to the goal of each level. Early levels will simply require you to score a certain number of points in the allotted number of moves, but there are many other goals the game throws at you.

Examples include. Completing a match with four of the same symbol will create a special, powered-up symbol once the others fall off the board (it will appear in the spot in which you dragged the final symbol to make the match). Completing a match with this symbol will clear out either everything in its row or column; you’ll be able to tell which by the glowing arrows on the veggie or fruit. Making a match with four like symbols in a 2×2 square will create a crate in the spot into which you dragged the final symbol.

Crates aren’t used for matches. Rather, you can tap on the crate and trace a path of like symbols, with the added advantage of being able to trace diagonally. Once you reach the end of the path, all the veggies or fruits on it will fly into the crate and off the board. Multiple crates can be used to keep a string going. For instance, you can tap on a crate, trace through three apples, then keep the string going by hitting another crate, at which point you can trace to any other symbol you want. Matching five similar symbols in a row or column leaves a barrel in the space you dragged the final symbol.

Barres can be swapped with any adjacent symbol, at which point they will eliminate all of that symbol from the board. Obviously, this is a very powerful ability, especially when you need to remove a certain fruit or vegetable to pass the level.

Matching five like symbols in an ‘L’ shape in any orientation will leave a blue ribbon fruit or vegetable behind. Making a match with one of these powered-up plants will temporarily leave it behind, where it will “explode” and eliminate all the symbols around it before disappearing itself. Level 7 introduces the bunnies, which can be summoned by clearing a certain number of carrots.

Once that total is reached, the bunnies will hop around and expand the board, giving you more room in which to make matches. Water symbols have a bit more to them than most others.

In some levels, clearing a specific number of water drops will cause one of the farmers to “plump” the symbols on the board. These symbols have a multiplier on them, signifying that you get that many more times the credit for clearing them. For instance, an “x5″” on a piece of corn means that will count for five units of corn if you make a match with it. The multipliers start at five and count down by one with each match that you make, so plan accordingly. Some levels will require you to clear dirt off the board, which can be done by making matches that include symbols that are in the dirt. Be careful, though: dirt can occasionally be more than one level deep, meaning you will have to make another match that includes the space in question to completely clean it off. If you fail to reach the goal or goals for your level in the required number of turns, you’ve got some options.

You can pay several Diamonds, the game’s hard currency, to continue on with five more moves and a shovel power-up, which can remove any one symbol of your choice. Failing that, you can opt to start all over, which takes away one of your lives.

Your lives max out at five, and when they start to dwindle, you can wait for them to refill over time or ask your friends for help in the grand Zynga fashion. Diamonds can also be spent to buy power-ups before you begin a level. If you need more, you can earn them in play as progress rewards or purchase them for real money.
