Vampires are blessed with uncannily high attributes, resistances and a natural fortitude that makes them very hard to kill in battle. Shadow of the Vampires Throne of Oblivion introduces many new character options, as well as a wealth of new systems and features. The title of the expansion points to the two main themes running through it. The more obvious theme is the latter, Oblivion, referring to the undead content.

As depicted on the cover art, the expansion introduces an entirely new character race, the Vampires. They are the chosen generals of Oblivion, fiends who have been claimed by the black powers of death, body and soul. The human folk of Ardan fought the new blight, but the elves of the Deathless Empire found a different solution. Much as they had with Chaos, Elvish visionaries sought to tame this new power, to bind and control it. From their experiments was born Ghorreghul, the death sorcery Humans call necromancy. After a time, the Elvish Empire declared it a forbidden science, and hunted down those who mastered it. But with Oblivion's advent, the dark secrets of the ages have been uncovered, and sages and loremasters of every race look upon the rebirth of necromancy with horror. Necromancers embrace an array of dark powers, from commanding hordes of undead to blasting their foes with curses and unholy force. Nightstalkers All of the new faces appearing in Throne of Oblivion aren't villains.

To counter the new undead threat, the Nightstalkers have come to take up arms against the dead. They were an ancient order, trained by the Titans of Ardan to serve them as scouts and spies. When the hordes of angry dead arose during the War of Shadows, the Nightstalkers devised a new style of fighting, and armed themselves with new spells and techniques to battle the darkness. When the War ended, the Nightstalkers knew that someday, Oblivion might ravage Aerynth again. No vault, no book could be entrusted to last forever, and so the thirteenth Titan wove a mighty spell, placing 12 of the mightiest into a magical slumber and removing them from the world, to some hidden realm born of magic.
